My friend, a successful business owner approaching 60 years of age, said, “I wonder if I am still relevant?” This is a familiar feeling among my age group; I know I have asked myself this question more with each passing year. We all want to be remembered and make our mark.
However, in the grand scheme of things, what we do will likely be forgotten; even hyper-successful people are unknown to the generations that follow. Their advancements and achievements contribute to progress, but their names are often forgotten. 1 Peter 1:24 says, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of the Lord stands forever.”
We can quickly get off track if we focus on our personal relevancy. Progress is hindered when we can’t see past ourselves. We were made to be part of something bigger than our personal contributions.
Instead of worrying about being relevant, let’s focus on those things that will outlast us. This life is temporary. God’s plan is eternal; it is His purposes that prevail.
We are just passing through this life, and the best thing we can do is point others to the solution found in Jesus. Let’s be the arms of Jesus to others who need Him, showing His love through whatever work we do and how we treat people every day.
No matter what age we are, our part is not to be relevant but to follow a faithful God who holds the whole world in His hands.
