Sometimes I get caught up in my right to live independently, and I forget about the sacrificial love given by soldiers and those who loved them. Something about a small-town 4th of July celebration helps me remember what this holiday is about — not the fireworks and our liberties but the sacrificial love of those who gave their lives for others.
American soldiers fought not only for our country’s freedom but for others as well. The Battle of Normandy was the largest seaborne invasion in history that ended WWII and the horrific evils of the Nazi regime.
July 4 reminds me that true freedom isn’t the right to do as I please but to love others enough to sacrifice my rights for theirs.
Jesus is the ultimate example of sacrificial love. He sacrificed His life so we could become children of God. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
This July, I am practicing sacrificial love by looking to bless people around me (everyone from the restaurant server to my family and friends) and to appreciate people who think and live differently than I do instead of silently criticizing them.
Please share how you practice sacrificial love.
