Wonder vs. Blasé

Wonder is a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable. That describes the Christmas story.

Jesus is the reason for the season but is that evident in how I celebrate Christmas?

Sometimes I get distracted by the hustle and bustle of the season, focusing too much on the present buying and activities, leaving me exhausted and blasé about what is truly important.

This year I am studying the Christmas story in Luke with eyes of wonder—meditating on each miracle that happened approximately 2,021 years ago when God came down to earth and demonstrated His redeeming love. I want to look up at the sky and wonder what the Shepherds saw that night. Ponder how God spoke to mere mortals in visions and dreams. Instead of thinking about gifts, I want to focus on what Christ has done to secure our future.

This Christmas, let’s unwrap Jesus in the manger. The true meaning of Christmas that brings the “good news that will cause great joy to all people” (Luke 2:10).
